Aunt Alice’s Peach Pie (& Moving)

by Melanie on August 3, 2009

This is the BEST peach pie I have ever had. My husbands Aunt Alice made it for us a few years ago and after the first bite, I was SMITTEN. Maybe it is the almond flavoring and the butter that sets this pie apart. Mmmmm I don’t know what it is that makes it so mouthwatering delicious….but I look forward to peach season all year just for this sweet pie!

I thought this would be fun way to announce that we are moving to GEORGIA the peach state…but it turns out that we are actually moving to Tennessee. My husband received a promotion with his company, Shaw Industries based in North West Georgia. We thought that was where we would live, but when we went house hunting we found a great area with great schools for our kids about 30 minutes away in a suburb of Chattanooga Tennessee. It is very confusing to our boys who thought we were moving to Georgia. So, is anyone from Tennessee/ North West Georgia who has some advice for us as we prepare for this big move? The moving company starts packing us up today! Our house sold in about 10 days, so this is all happening very fast. We should be there in about a week!

That peach pie looks delicious, and I am definitely bookmarking this recipe. Thanks for sharing it.
I've driven through Chattanooga a couple of times going from DC to Houston, and it's a beautiful area. Good luck with the move!

You will LOVE Tennessee…
the scenery is breath taking. So much to do with not a lot of driving, Chattanooga, Atlanta, Nashville and Knoxville…
Lookout Mountain,
Chattanooga Choo-Choo,
Tennessee Aquarium,
Ruby Falls,
Nashville Zoo,
Centennial Park & Parthenon,
Grand Ole Opry,
Ryman Auditorium,
Cumberland Caverns,
The Smokey Mountains,
and of course you’ll have to bleed ORANGE…nothing like a fall afternoon (or night) at Neely Stadium…

Love your website.

I'm from Chattanooga and grew up on Signal Mtn. I would move back in a second! The temp is about 8 degrees cooler. The schools are excellent (brand new high school). Strong, safe community.

If you want more info you can email me at [email protected], but I'm sure you'll love it there.

Make sure you white water raft the Ocoee before the summers over.

You'll love Georgia – lots of good solid Church members. I'm from there – you'll find that everyone is willing to help out…and summers are hot and humid! There are beautiful "mountains" (aka rolling hills) that you can drive up to in the north…so you may be luckier than most and skip alot of the humidity!

I'm also from Signal Mtn., TN and love it there! It is a safe, close community, well maintained, beautiful, and a good place for children. The schools are better up there then in other areas of chattanooga. I'd give signal a look! I know several people that would take you around if needed.

Oh yum! I put almond in just about everything but I've never put it in my peach pie. Why didn't I think of that?? The peach ice cream looks amazing too. Okay, I just need some peaches now so I can get cooking! Congrats on the promotion/move too!

Found your blog a week ago looking for a bread recipe and have come back often because I loved the whole wheat bread. I am from Ga. and you are going to love it after you go through culture shock. You are coming at the hottest sticky time of the year so turn the air on high and reach out to your southern friends they will help!!!

You will love Chattanooga! We live on the other side of Tennessee. Be sure to check out Mckay's Bookstore as soon as you get there. It's a wonderful bookstore with used books. Good luck!

I'm further south…3hrs. from Atlanta. But if you're ever headed in that direction: 1.Never drive around Atlanta during rush hour.
2. There's a Drive-In movie theater (can you believe it? and it looks decent, not old & grungy) in the vicinity of Emory University Hospital area. 3. Near the drive-in is a little restaurant called Doc Chey's Noodle House that's really good (Peace/Love/Noodles). Lastly, check out Bakerella's website for where she buys her baking supplies. Bets of luck! [email protected]

Hi Melanie…Miss you! I just had to say that this is the same recipe I got from my mother in law…must be one of those tradtions handed down through generations of great cooks. I can't wait until peach season every year so I can make this. I always make two because my three big guys devour them. Loving your blog…I check in once in a while…just tried the pork salad last month and it was great!

This pie was absolutely delicious! I think it’s the almond flavoring that makes it stand out. I’m a big fan of your website because most of your recipes are easy to follow and turn out great. In this case I’m wondering if I did something wrong because the pie was more like soup. It was still amazing but I just thought you could tell me how to make it less soupy and more pie-like?

Hi Michelle,
Sorry this has taken me so long to answer your question ( I am very behind in my emails:) but I think the reason it turns out runny sometimes is due to the juicyness of the peaches used. I have ran into this problem myself. If you notice that the fruit is extemely juicy (like dripping from you hands while you peel them, then increase the cornstarch by a tablespoon or two. Good luck!!
