Melanie’s Famous Chocolate Chip Cookies

by Brittany on March 17, 2010

I have no idea how out of 25 cookie recipes on our blog we don’t have a single good ol‘ reliable chocolate chip cookie recipe!! That’s pretty messed up! I’m sure it’s because everyone has a chocolate chip recipe they love and so it’s fun to share recipes that are different and new. However, everyone could use another wonderful chocolate chip cookie recipe… especially this one. It really is famous too… Melanie won 1st place with it at a Thanksgiving Point cookie bake off!! It is my number one chocolate chip cookie recipe – fabulous taste and texture. Enjoy!

Melanie’s Famous Chocolate Chip Cookies
submitted by Brittany at www.thesisterscafe.com
1 cube (1/2 cup) butter, softened *not melted!*
1/2 cup shortening
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups flour
3/4 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
Mix butter, shortening and sugars – do not over mix. (The key to this recipe is minimal mixing – try it with a wooden spoon instead of a mixer.) Add vanilla and eggs. Sift together dry ingredients and add them next. Mix until everything is combined. Add one package of milk chocolate chips. (Guittard is my all time favorite. The milk chocolate chips are large and so smooth and creamy… yum!) Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes. Take them out when they are barely brown. Serve warm out of the oven with a tall glass of cold milk… YUM!

**FYI–a note from Melanie:
A couple of years ago I quit using shortening in anything. I now use all butter in this recipe. So, I now leave out the shortening and replace it with an equal amount of butter ( 1/2 cup). I found that the cookies still have that perfect texture as shown and don’t go flat, if you chill the dough for an hour or so before baking. You may need to bake for a few minutes longer–but DO NOT over bake–take out when barely brown. Then leave on the pan for a few minutes before transferring to the wire rack for cooling**

I'm a little confused-
Do you use the butter in place of the shortning or do you use both?

I have a butter question too, so do you use 1 1/2 cups butter now that you no longer use the shortening? Also, is the baking time adjusted at all if you chill the dough as recommended above? Thanks!

Hi Julie, sorry this is a month late!! I just found your comment. For me, there are a couple reasons why my cookies turn out flat: the butter is melted or too soft OR high altitude – add a couple tablespoons of flour to the batter. I hope that helps – let me know!

this recipe is by far the best choc chip cookie recipe I have found, it even beats my grandmas old family recipe! I am too impatient to wait for my butter to soften so I melt it and then freeze the dough and make cookies whenever I want by just thawing out however much dough I want! Still turns out great!

where do you buy Guittard chocolate chips? I cannot find them at any of my local stores. Thanks.

Hi Heidi,

I am not sure where you live. I live in Utah, and I have found Guittard chocolate chips at Kohlers, Fresh Market, and Smiths. I think I have seen them at Macey's, too. They don't carry them at the Wal-Mart near me, though. Some of my sisters live out of state… I don't know if they have seen them at any of their stores.

Hope that helps!

Mindy

Thanks for getting back to me, Mindy. I live in Michigan, and I have checked Wal-mart, Kroger, and meijer and have had no luck. So, I might just stick with Nestle. Thanks!

Used all butter and they were SO good! We loved them. Mine were a little flatter than the picture, but not by much. The texture and taste were outstanding. Our new favorite…and I thought we were set on my recipe for life. Oh well. Glad to have found one that’s even better! :)
