Snickerdoodles

by Brittany on June 4, 2010

Who doesn’t love these sweet, buttery cookies with a hint of cinnamon? They have to be one of the funnest cookies to make. And the name is even fun to say! :) I had a great time introducing snickerdoodles to my 3 year old Gabe. I would make the balls of dough and he would roll them around in the cinnamon sugar… and we both ate them straight out of the oven! Yum!! I had forgotten the joy of baking these fun little cookies. This is the good old Betty Crocker recipe that Mom always made for us growing up and it’s still my favorite!

1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup shortening (*I cut this out and use 1 cup butter total)
2 eggs
2 3/4 cups flour
2 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 cup sugar
2 tsp ground cinnamon
Mix 1 1/2 cups sugar, butter, shortening, and eggs in large bowl. Stir in flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt. Shape dough into 1 1/4 inch balls. Mix 1/4 cup sugar and cinnamon. Roll balls in cinnamon-sugar mixture. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in 400 degree oven for 8-10 minutes or until set. (Don’t overbake!!) Remove from cookie sheet to wire rack to cool.

I love Snickerdoodles. You need to try them with the Hershey's Cinnamon chips. They are even more tasty!

I've been letting my 2-year-old help me more and more in the kitchen, and I know he'd love to make these! I'd love to hear him try to say "snickerdoodle", too.

I came across your site while searching for decent Snickerdoodle recipes. I noted that your photo shows your cookies being on the thicker side, which is what I'm hoping to do. So far, every time I've tried to make them, they turn out flat. Did you do anything special to your cookies to get them to stay thick, like your photo shows? I'm looking forward to checking out the rest of your site.
