We love Mexican food at our house, and my boys favorite is ground beef tacos or burrito bowls! I have always purchased taco seasoning in a little jug from Costco and never considered making it myself until I ran out last week! I already had the meat browned and reached up in the cupboard for the taco seasoning and it was EMPTY! Then I remembered that I had used a whole bunch for walking tacos for my sons scout troop and must have not noticed that I had used it up! Well, I had hungry boys waiting for dinner and didn’t want to have to run to the store for more, so I googled it and found that I had all the ingredients for homemade taco seasoning right there in my spice cabinet! I have no idea, why I never thought to do this before! It was the BEST taco meat we have ever had and best of all, I knew and could pronounce every thing that went into it!
When a couple of my boys were diagnosed with Celiac Disease a couple of years ago, I had to start reading labels carefully and you would be surprised what has gluten (or wheat) in it. I have to be careful with taco seasoning, some brands have gluten! So strange, but true! Now I can make flavorful, awesome taco meat from scratch and it is so easy to do that I will never buy another packet again!
By the way my boys favorite tacos are ‘Walking Tacos’! In case you have never heard of them–you simply open a single serving bag of chips (Fritos or Nacho Cheese Doritos are their favorites for this) and put in a scoop of taco meat, cheese, lettuce, salsa and any other toppings you like on tacos. All you need is a fork and you are good to go–you can even walk while you eat your dinner–thus the name walking tacos! A beloved campout meal for Boy Scouts!!
