This time of year always gets me excited about healthy eating and exercise! I am sure it is due to all the indulgences of the holidays, and boy did I enjoy it this year! Now my kitchen is cleared of treats, and junk and I am ready to start the New Year off with good nutritional choices. One thing that I am focusing on this year is getting more vegetables into my diet, especially greens. My favorite way is green smoothies. I have posted about several green smoothie recipes already here, but this is my latest favorite ‘recipe’.
You may already know this trick, but greens freeze GREAT! I like to make little freezer smoothie packs full of a cup of spinach, kale and half a banana to throw into my protein shake in the morning. I buy big bags of organic spinach and kale and then freeze about half of them in bags like this:
I also like to add a small spoonful of almond butter (or you could do peanut butter if you prefer) to my smoothies. I can not believe the difference this makes in my shakes. It tastes SO good and the healthy fats also add to the smoothness of the shake and help you feel full for longer. I have tried the powdered peanut butter too, which works great, but I like the real stuff better. Also, I LOVE this brand (Nature’s Bounty Complete Protein and Vitamin in chocolate and vanilla ) shake mix the best (I get it on Amazon). I read a review on protein shake powders and this was the most like Shakeology but at a fraction of the price. It actually tastes great and has lots of vitamins, protein and even probiotics!
I also LOVE the Blendtec Blender. They are bit pricey but worth it for the quality and power you get and I have had mine for 10 years now! You will never know there is kale or spinach in there once you hit the smoothie or whole juice button. I like how it fits under my countertop (unlike the Vitamix) and doesn’t require the plunger tool.
Do you have a favorite healthy protein shake mix or blender? I would love to hear what ‘recipes’ and tools you like best. Leave it in the comments or email me at email@example.com.
- 1 cup milk (I use unsweetened almond milk)
- 1-2 cups greens (I use spinach and kale)
- 1 serving of protein shake mix (I like Nature's Bounty Chocolate or Vanilla Protein and Vitamin Shake Mix)
- ½ TB almond or peanut butter
- ½ banana
- 5-7 ice cubes (use less if your banana and kale are frozen)
- Put all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Add more ice cubes or milk/water to get the consistency you like.
